About the speaker:
Mr Chan Koon Chung is a writer, critic, and film producer. In 1976, he founded City Magazine, serving as chief editor and publisher for 23 years, and he has made lasting impacts on Hong Kong’s intellectual and cultural landscape. During the 1980s and 1990s, he worked in film and media. He wrote award-nominated screenplays, including Hong Kong 1941, and collaborated with leading directors in Hong Kong and the United States. Since becoming a full-time writer in 2003, Mr Chan has published 25 books. His major works include The Hong Kong Trilogy and The China Trilogy, including The Fat Years, which has been translated into 14 languages. Currently residing in Beijing, Mr Chan is one of the most important public intellectuals in the Chinese speaking world, and he has produced fictional and non-fictional writings exploring social change, memory, and power in Hong Kong and mainland China.
