Abstract:

What is the position of the self in theory? How to use writings about self to engage in theoretical issues in identity and politics?

In this workshop, the speakers will stage a conversation on the commingling of autobiography and theory in thinking and writing. They will address a recent trend in academic writing that uses self-writing in theorization, i.e. autotheory. This conversation explores how scholars, artists, and communities draw on the lived experience as scholarly methods to cultivate new relations.

Biography:

SaeHim Park is an art historian, currently a fellow at Duke University, working on contemporary politics and aesthetics of representing Asian women within the clash of imperialisms of Japan and the United States.

Xuenan Cao is a scholar in media and cultural studies at CUHK, focusing on media theory and the social implications of deep learning.
