chris talk 20160722Date: 26 Augst 2016 (Friday)
Time: 2:00pm – 4:00pm
Venue: G24, Fung King Hey Building, CUHK
Speaker: Dr. Christopher Patterson (CUHK)

Dr. Patterson will share his work so far on his Postdoctoral research project, “Open World Empire: The Cultural Politics of Interactivity,” which aims to understand interactive gameplay and the discourses of information technology that envelop games. The project explores how games form imperial attitudes, particularly towards sites of production in Southeast Asia and sites of development and design in America. His project questions the dominant perspective that playing games is a type of development or educational progress, and instead analyzes games through critical cultural studies to explore how games enact playful protests against the power, identity, and order of information technology. In doing so, his project asks how games themselves can reveal new insights concerning the global network of manufacturing, processing, and consumption taking place in the Asia Pacific.

Dr. Christopher B. Patterson’s research and teaching spans the breadth of cultural studies, including Asian diasporic literatures, Postcolonial and diaspora studies, digital humanities, queer and gender studies, critical theory, and video games.

To date, his publications have focused on two areas of study: Asian diasporic literatures in English, and imperial attitudes in video games. His book monograph, Transitive Cultures: Transpacific Anglophone Literature, is currently in progress, and he is currently undertaking a research project on games, “Open World Empire: The Cultural Politics of Interactivity.” He hosts the podcast series, New Books in Asian American Studies, and has been active as an organizer for the Seattle Asian American Film Festival and other research groups.

Before joining the Chinese University of Hong Kong in December 2015, Patterson taught for two years in Nanjing, China, and for over five years as a graduate student at the University of Washington, where he earned his Ph.D. in 2013.
