Guest Talk: Cultural Development and Institution Building in Hong Kong
Hong Kong has transformed from being considered a “cultural desert” to a international contemporary arts hub in recent years with the opening of the West Kowloon Cultural District and the rise of Art Basel Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Art Week. Having worked in curatorial leadership positions at Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, M+, museum of visual culture and Para Site Art Centre, Tobias has played pivotal role in Hong Kong’s cultural development. In this talk, Tobias will share his experiences in fostering the contemporary art scene in Hong Kong, and his perspectives on the unique challenges and opportunities in the city. He will also share about his new role in cultural placemaking, reflecting the diverse arenas in which curatorial practice can make a difference in our cities.

Guest Speaker: Tobias Berger
Based in Hong Kong, Berger now serves as the Curatorial Director at Serakai Salons and Projects and as Adjunct Curator, Tanoto Art Foundation in Singapore.
Tobias was Head of Art and Curator at Large at Tai Kwun Contemporary between 2015 to 2024. From 2010-2015 Tobias served as the first Curator of Visual Arts for the M+ Museum in Hong Kong. During his career, Tobias has served in various curatorial roles for institutions across the region and globally including at the Nam June Paik Art Center (Korea), Para/Site Art Space (Hong Kong), ARTSPACE, Aukland and Museum Fridericianum (Germany). He also curated the Baltic Triennial of International Arts, the Fotofestival Manheim, Ludwigshafen and Heidelberg, the Hong Kong pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and the New Zealand pavilion at the Sao Paulo Biennial.
