He explains the popularity of Taiwan cinema in Singapore as such: “Singaporeans typically find in Taiwan cinema linguistic expressions – in Mandarin, Hokkien or Hakka – that they have lost or whose level they cannot attain, settings that are at once strange and familiar, or characters whose warmth, innocence and hospitality embody cultural values or ideals that they find attractive.”
