這個研究方向主要從文化研究的角度研究中國現代文學和思想史。我們致力強調中國現代知識份子思考的複雜性，以及中國現代性的跨文化和混雜特質。這一研究也嘗試解拆現時「左╱右」、「本土╱全球」、「文學書寫／哲學思考」、「東方／西方」和「傳統╱現代」等主流的二元對立思維。簡言之，「跨文化現代性」這個概念，不單指涉跨語際和跨國族的實踐，它亦同時挑戰既有學科領域劃分的專業分工模式。

This  research direction studies modern Chinese literature and intellectual history from the perspectives of Cultural Studies. We attempt to highlight the complexity of modern Chinese intellectuals’ thinking, and the transcultural and hybrid nature of Chinese modernity. The research also tries to deconstruct the dominant binary oppositions of left/right, local/global, literary writing/philosophical thinking, East/West and tradition/modernity. In brief, the concept of “transcultural modernity” not only refers to trans-lingual and trans-national practices, but also challenges the division of academic disciplines.
