In this talk, Brian WONG will share about the journey of Liber Research Community and how it started, and discuss its mission to conduct collaborative, participatory research on urban issues in Hong Kong. He will also discuss how the research community disseminates its findings through news media and social media and intervenes in the policy-making process by attempting to address gaps in public policy. Liber Research Community presents an example of community-led policy research where independent groups play a role in generating public discourse and encouraging civic engagement by raising questions that contends with the grand narratives of the city’s development as presented by government and its policies.

Speakers: Brian WONG
Brian Wong has been a researcher at Liber Research Community since 2017. With a background in geography and public policy, his work is concerned with advocating for a more equitable society with a focus on urban and rural development. Together with his colleagues in Liber, he has published research findings that include brownfields, nano-flats, small house policy, mega infrastructure and urban redevelopment projects. Brian has also engaged in a collaboration project using AI with an artist to raise awareness on the impacts of the artificial island building in Hong Kong, with a view to encourage deliberation to push for positive policy changes.

Moderator: Prof. Ashley Lee WONG
Prof. Ashley Lee Wong is an Assistant Professor of Cultural Studies in the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
